Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital is a modern, full-service facility providing all you need for the care of your pet.
Our new hospital opened in December 2002, making us six and a half years old! Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital is the newest stand alone veterinary hospital in the ACT. Of course, Michael Hayward and the team have been serving the pets of Gungahlin since early 1995, so we are really 13 years old. We're a small-animal hospital – that is, we look after cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, mice and rats, ferrets, fish, injured wildlife and small reptiles and amphibians. Find out more »
Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital helps prevent rabies in Africa.
The vaccine manufacturer Intervet donates rabies vaccine for use in the Serengeti when vets in Australia, the UK and he USA use Nobivac vaccines in dogs. Gungahlin Vet recently changed to Nobivac dog vaccines, for a number of reasons including the opportunity to support this very worthwhile charity in the Serengeti. Read more here www.afya.org. Charlie and Harry have found a home!
The 2 lovely adult cats who were with us for several weeks have now found a good home together (12 May). While we currently have no adoptees seeking a family, please return to our website regularly to check if you are looking for a feline companion. While 62% of Australian households share their lives with a furry, feathered or scaled comapnion, about 80% of those who don't would like to have a pet at some time. Visit our cat adoption centre page for information on how the system works and details of current adoptees. Cuddles (pictured above) also happily found a new home in May.
Coping with colder weather
With cooler evenings already upon us, it’s timely to remember that our pets, especially the very old and young and the very small, can really suffer in the cold. Many older pets may experience painful arthritis, while small exotic pets such as guinea pigs are at risk of death on frosty nights if they’re not provided with adequate shelter and insulation. Now’s a great time to check that bedding, hutches, aviaries etc. are all in good order, and to consider preventative treatments for arthritis (Cartrophen injections, joint-supportive diet or supplements, painkillers etc.). Your vet will be happy to discuss all the options with you. Read more here
New products for your best friend
New in for cats is the Cat It Drinking Fountain and Feeding Station, which supplies a constant stream of filtered running water. It’s perfect for cats that prefer to drink from taps, water features, fish tanks etc. and has health benefits too – it encourages cats with conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease and urinary stones to drink more, keeping them healthier for longer. $65.50 from the Hospital.
Dogs will appreciate the arrival of new products in the very popular Triple Crown Everlasting range. These tough, attractive toys and their chewy edible refills are designed to keep dogs mentally stimulated and out of mischief during time alone – a must for the canine member of the busy working family. Prices start from $17 for toys and $5.70 for two refill treats.
Dog Parks
Michael has been working with the ACT Government on a proposal to develop two enclosed off-leash dog parks - one at Lake Ginninderra and one at Lake Tuggeranong.
The ACT has lots of off-leash areas (details available here) but none of them are enclosed. Dogs who run off leash, whether in an enclosed area or not, should be healthy, vaccinated, well socialised with people and other dogs, and be under control - you should be able to call your dog back, or put it into an "emergency drop", with instant obedience.
This is a very exciting proposal - the Government usually seems to spend money on everyone except dog owners, who make up about 40% of the community! We'll pass on more information as it becomes public.
